Welcome to Reading the South…

Where local residents and community groups in the south of England…
come together with professional writers and artists….
to explore what ‘the South’ means to them…
using local library facilities, resources and archives…
to inspire the creativity in all of us

Reading the South is all about sharing creativity, so we welcome your ideas, your writing, your images and your comments on what ‘the South’ means to you.

Please contact us with any of your own creations and feel free to share your comments and inspirations on our blog.

Reading the South began in 2015 as a collaboration between the library services of East Sussex and West Sussex. Through writer-led open workshops and public events held at libraries across the counties, local residents worked with writers to create, in their own words, impressions of the region they live in.

After an interim ‘research and development’ phase in 2017, Reading the South is now planning for an extended programme of further creative work in 2018-19Kent Library Service will join the library services of East and West Sussex in developing series of activities and events entitled ‘My Library My Home’.   Utilising the extensive local history archives and resources of the libraries, participants from the local communities will create written, oral and visual works reflecting on their local history and their personal memories of and connections to the South.  Professional writers, artists and other creatives will lead the activities.
